Battle of Manila

Treaty of Paris

On May 1st, 1898 at Manila Bay in the Philippines, one of the U.S Asiatic Squadron defeated and destroyed the Spanish Pacific fleet. U.S warship was able to slip into the island and into Manila Bay. The American located the Spanish fleet and Admiral George Dewey gave permission to aim fire. He then ordered a pause in the fighting. Late that morning, more fighting resumed. The Spanish lost more than 370 troops, while the Americans lost less than 10 troops.

Officials from the United States and Spain met in Paris on October 1, 1898 to create a treated that will end the war. The conference discuss Cuba’s independence and also the claim of other Western Pacific and Latin America territories. The U.S paid Spain $20 million for the ownership of the Philippines. Puerto Rico and Guam was also under American control. The treaty was signed on December 10, 1898.
