The Battle of Somme
The battle of Somme also known as Somme Offensive was fought from July 1-November 18, 1916. It was near the Somme River in France. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history. It lasted nearly 5 months long. It was the first major war fought with Britain’s new volunteer army. It was a joint operation between Britain and France’s forces intended to achieve a victory over the Germans of the Western Front. It was the biggest battle of World War 1. The British Army had suffered 420,000 casualties but they also gained experience that would help them later win the Western Front war. The French lost 200,000 and the Germans lost over 800,000 soldiers. Over 20 million people saw footage of that war and it’s one of the most controversial wars in the world. The film “The Battle of Somme” used actual footage from soldiers to show the bloody war.
