Soviet-Afghan War's affect on the United States

President Carter announced the Carter Doctrine, which meant that the United States would not allow any other outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf. The Russian Wheat Deal was determined by the President to establish trade with the USSR and lessen Cold War tensions. He also reinstated registration for the draft for young males and prohibited Americans from participating in the 1980's Summer Olympics in Moscow.

After the withdrawal of the Soviet troops, the United States shifted interest from Afghanistan. All funding was cut off the Afghan leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and his party. They also reduced assistance for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
