Hi, folks.
In preparation for our upcoming meeting I've been researching our original decision to carry the insurance. I was surprised by some of the information I turned up and wanted to share it with you.
Mark was our president in 2009 when the question came up. He asked the Pro Bono attorneys for their opinion on the matter. I've attached a document that summarizes their findings, which Chris sent me a couple of years ago.
On re-reading the Pro Bono opinion I was surprised at how strongly they recommended that we either carry the insurance OR "require proof from each performer in the form of a certificate of insurance that they have their own worker’s compensation coverage prior to the performance." In the discussion that we had about this at the Aug. 2009 board meeting, Rivka Willick stated that she was always asked if she carries her own insurance for any gig that pays over $500. Rivka was the chair of the Storytelling Committee and is a performing storyteller herself. It's worth noting that the Pro Bono document states that the attorneys who were asked for their opinion were Work Comp specialists with many years' experience.
The Aug. 2009 minutes are available at:
See you all on the 19th.
Lori
NOTE: The document referred to in this message carries a specific request that it not be shared outside the Board. It is therefore not being made part of the WCC's public records.
