HSNOI
We taped two fine shows in October:
654) 10/18/16 Eva Salina - renowned singer, interpreter, and teacher of traditional and traditionally-based Balkan music. Nurtured through years of mentorship by some of the greatest living Balkan musicians, Eva has devoted her life to the longevity and evolution of East European musical traditions. Eva’s rich, supple voice moves effortlessly through the intricate and demanding expression inherent in Romani songs, intertwining vintage pop sounds with her singular interpretations. www.evasalina.com
655) 10/18/16 8:00 Rodeo Gypsies Acoustic Band - though they usually include an eclectic mix of cover tunes, acoustic classic rock, blues, rockin’ country, etc. in their sets, this show features great originals by Steve Kunzman with smooth vocal harmonies, clean mandolin fills, expertly played shaker egg percussion and cool-sounding acoustic bass uke http://rodeogypsies.info
Upcoming:
We were very disappointed that Claudia Schmittt and Sally Rogers had to cancel their scheduled appearances on the series in November, but we still have a great line-up.
656) 11/1/16 Billy Jonas Band - originally from Chicago, he has lived in Asheville for 21 years. His first ensemble, the Oberlin Big Bang Theory, was the testing ground for his brand of recyclable, homemade instruments, and neo-tribal hootenanny-ism; Billy honed his songwriting and singing skills in the duo The Billys in the '90s, and subsequently has performed both solo and with The Billy Jonas Band. http://www.billyjonas.com
657) 11/1/16 Aideen O’Donnell - harpist and singer, studied in her native Ireland at the Sion Hill School with renowned Irish harpist Mairin Ni She (Ferriter) and received operatic voice training at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Coming to USA she completed her B.A. in Music at the College of St. Elizabeth. Dublin born, she is two-time winner of the O’Carolan International Harp & Voice Competition at Keadue, Ireland and winner of the All Ireland Harp Competition at Granard, Ireland. Other awards include first place in both Gaelic singing and Harp instrumental at the Annual Irish Festival of New York, USA. www.aideenodonnell.com
658) 12/8/16 Fiona Tyndall - Ennis born singer with a fascinating treatment of very traditional songs in the Irish language. She has essentially kept the lyrics and style of singing in tact with a beautiful voice and her own interpretation, but the packaging and accompaniment she has chosen is unexpected. It is rich and truly jazz. www.fionatyndall.com/
659) 12/8/16 Cosmic American Derelicts - founded by George Kapitanellis "The Greek" in 1998, since then they have performed on stages through the eastern seaboard, UK & California, incorporating many styles of music into songs: Rock and Roll, Blues, Country & Western/Honky Tonk, Bluegrass, Traditional Folk/Mountain Music as well as some Reggae and Old School Pop. The current band line up: Scott Lauro vocals and guitar, Eddie Rainey vocals, guitar, dobro, mandolin, steel, Sotiri Karlis on Drums and George Kapitanellis on Bass and arrangements http://www.cosmicamericanderelicts.com
660) 1/26/17 Tim Grimm - a Rennaisance man in the performing arts world… He has for the past 15 years, blended his love for songwriting, travel, and the storytelling of acting (theatre, film and television). His most recent recording, THE TURNING POINT, produced the #1 song on Folk radio in 2014-- KING OF THE FOLKSINGERS. It was a particularly gratifying honor given the song is a tribute to Tim's friend and musical icon, Ramblin' Jack Elliott.
