Subject: Motion to drop Workers' Comprehensive Insurance
To all Boardies
Since 2009, the Folk Project has carried Workers' Comprehensive Insurance. The purpose of this insurance is ostensibly to protect us from damage claims from our performers who might be injured while performing on our stage. (As I understand it, our Liability Insurance specifically excludes those performers from coverage, although I am not certain about that.) Last year, our Workers' Comp. insurance premiums were $2,250, almos half our total insurance cost.
I will be introducing a motion to drop our Workers' Comp insurance at the February meeting for the following reasons:
• It is contrary to common practice in the Folk Community.
• The cost is way out of proportion to the coverage.
• The likelihood of a claim being filed against us is vanishingly small. And
• It is uncertain whether such a claim would actually be paid by our current policy.
I have attached a rather extensive report on the reasons for my motion.
There is currently an investigation by some other Committee members into this question. They will be producing a report at some time in the future, but I do not know the schedule. I am introducing this motion, primarily to move this question to resolution. I expect to briefly introduce the motion and my reasons at the meeting, and then table the motion until the results of the investigation are reported. Please spend some time reading the attached document.
