UKEFEST
Uke Fest (Event 3 & 4)
Committee: Pam Robinson, FiL Wisneski, Bob Safranek
The Committee is considering changing the name of the festival to New Jersey Uke Fest, presented by The Folk Project or New Jersey Ukulele Festival, presented by The Folk Project from Uke New Jersey!
1. This would put our fest higher the the alphabetical listing of Ukuele festivals.
2. Having New Jersey first makes the location easier to spot in listings.
3. Have run searches for New Jersey Uke Fest, Uke New Jersey, NJ Uke Fest and our Festival is at the top of all searches.
Festival Dates: Aug 26-27, 2016
Locations: Many locations have been considered here is what we have found:
1. MUF - (home of the Minstrel) still is unsure if construction will proceed as scheduled this summer and will not have an answer until at least mid May.
2. Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township (location Minstrel is moving to if MUF unavailable) - Not available due to prior booking.
3. First Presbyterian Church of East Hanover - (home of Swingin’ Tern) is uninterested in renting to the festival for the weekend. - They have regular scheduled events in some of the rooms that we would need to us.
3. Ogden Memorial Church (former home of Swingin’ Tern) does not have large enough Workshop rooms available.
4. Watchung Art Center - Does not have enough space for the concerts or workshops.
5. Reformed Church of Highland Park (former home of the Highland Park Dance) to far away from our main audience. Would loose Minstrel regulars.
6. Church of the Redeemer - no parking lot. Committee felt that street or muni parking was not appropriate.
7. Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University - minimum of $2500 and no place for group lunch.
8. Camp Cromwell in Martinsville NJ part of the Boys Club of NY - no response to attempted contact.
9. Bickford Theater - asking minimum of $1600 plus 40% of the box office. Venue accommodations are ok but not great. Attendees would be walking all over the facility for activities. Also the Museum would be open to the public on Saturday Day. And the concert hall holds 310. Given that we had between 125 and 150 for most of the Uke Fest Concerts - a half empty hall never looks good.
10. Ukrainian American Cultural Center - is asking $2400. - Has facilities for a 150 seat concert setting. Has 2 additional workshop rooms that can hold between 15 and 40. Has a nice lobby for setting up vendors. Has space for a green room. Has a lounge for serving lunch. The Center is also willing to provide boxed lunches on a cash basis at a reasonable rate, make Coffee available for purchase all day Saturday and even provide Coffee/tea service and cake/cookies on a cash basis for the concerts. The Center is located just north of Rt 10 and near a wide variety of restaurants for dinner. the Center has parking for 130 cars. The only drawback is that there will be another event at the Center on Saturday evening that starts at 7pm in one of their other rooms.
Based on the above research - The Committee is prepared to sign a contract with the Ukrainian American Cultural Center.
