Newsletter Committee Annual Report 2017-12
Things are proceeding as usual with the invaluable help of Kathi Caccavale, Pat Brangs, Nancy Kelner, Liz Pagan, Bill Henderson, and Joanne Cronin. The proofreaders, as usual, do an excellent job of catching errors that I miss.
Kathi prints 200 newsletters, and mails out approximately 163 individually, plus another 3-4 in one envelope to Morris arts. She keeps two or three back in case she’s asked to mail to a new member. The rest, around 30, go to The Minstrel, to be put out the following month on the information table.
The September paper newsletter was delayed due to the printers moving their printing operation. The eNewsletter went out on time, but the paper version was delayed about a week, coming out the last days of August.
During November, my Comcast email was misbehaving badly, causing problems in preparing and releasing the December newsletter. For some reason, every attempt to send out the newsletter PDF as an email attachment failed without any error indication. This screwed up not only the release of the newsletter to the printers but also releasing it for the proofreaders to review. It took about a week to overcome these problems, which meant that the December newsletter was sent out late. To avoid this in the future, I am going to begin asking for confirmation emails when important files are sent out.
One of the grammar checkers I use for the newsletter is web-based and can report how our use of English compares with others who use the service. Here is one of the report summaries from this past year:
* You wrote more words than 86% of Grammarly users did.
* You were more accurate than 95% of Grammarly users.
* You have a larger vocabulary than 94% of Grammarly users.
Congratulations, all you newsletter submitters.
Sincerely,
George Otto
