Archives Committee Report to the Board
July 2018
One of the committee’s challenges has been finding a permanent home for our collection. Rutgers already houses 6 boxes of materials but we looked into the possibility of moving the boxes to the Morristown and Morris Township Library, which has a very fine local history department.
In June, I met with the head of the MMTL archives. Although he’s interested in our collection, we determined that they don’t have room to store more than 6 boxes. As there aren’t any other public institutions in Morris County that handle this type of collection, with storage space and an onsite archivist, it appears that our best bet is to leave the collection at Rutgers.
The advantage is that space is unlimited, the department is staffed by professional archivists, and we can add to the collection and arrange it as we go. It’s also a logical place to house the collection and will be findable on their website. We think of ourselves as Morris County-based, but we are a NJ institution as well.
The next step will be to make a detailed container list of exactly what’s in the 6 boxes -- then we’ll have a better idea of what we need in donations. For instance, we don’t need 12 copies of the same newsletter issue. We’ll also find out the RU donation procedure so that we can move forward on accepting donations.
