Newsletter Committee Report 2014-09

Things are proceeding as usual with help from Pat Brangs, Nancy Kelner, Liz Pagan, Bill Henderson, Paul Fisher, and Eddie Roffman. Pat had 300 copies of the newsletter printed, with 190 issues mailed out and the rest distributed to the usual venues and people.

This past issue had all its web links (URLs and email) active in the standard PDF version of the newsletter. To help identify these links, and to help me track down those which weren't being turned on correctly, I had the links colored a dark blue when they were made active, similar to how links appear on web pages. The two-sided PDF does not have active links because it has to go through a different print-preparation process which does not support such links.

The Festival Flyer was stapled into the middle of the newsletter and attached to the end of the PDF file. Robin and Mark provided me with a PDF file that also had active links.

By mistake, there was one performer who had a listing in both the Gigs section and the Calendar section, but the Gigs section showed a performance time of 8-10pm while the Calendar announcement showed just the ending time, 10pm. Both listings had the performer's correct URL, however, so readers had direct access to the original performer calendar. They asked to have an email correction sent out to the membership pointing out the error. After consulting with the email list owners (Lori and Eddie), I let them know that we regretted the error but would not be sending out an email correction. I will, however, be updating the eNewsletters with the correct starting time.

Mike Agranoff pointed out that the cover article used a smaller typeface than usual and it was hard to read. This apparently happened because the cover had two connected articles and this was the only way I could make them both fit. I actually didn't notice the problem when I saw the newsletter on the screen, it was only when I saw the paper copy that the problem became apparent. I'll find a different solution to this problem in future.
