Greetings! My report is in three sections this month -
1) Evenings of Music
2) Halloween Show
3) Committee name change
1) EVENING OF MUSIC
There was no Evening of Music in October due to the Getaway.
November's Evening of Music will be held at Mark and Robin Schaffer's Rockaway home. The December Evening of Music and Holiday Party will be at Christine and Steve Humphreys' Randolph home.
2) HALLOWEEN SHOW:
A very enjoyable show was produced by Deborah Graham on the Eve of Halloween. Nineteen slots were performed in which 34 members participated.
The show was staffed by 14 volunteers. There were 111 paid admissions and
$97 in creel donations, making the gross income to the Folk Project general account $1,207. After deducting expenses of $487 (including rent), the net profit to the Folk Project is $720.
Many thanks to Deborah for a fine job and a successful show!
3) COMMITTEE NAME CHANGE
I propose to change the name of my Committee from "Internal Affairs" to "Event Hosting" as of January 1, 2016.
The name “Internal Affairs” may have been reasonably acceptable since all of the events under the Committee’s purview are intended as benefits of Folk Project membership and not open to the general public. However, I have also found the name to imply secrecy and believe it bears a negative connotation which I would be happy correcting.
In considering a new name for the Committee, I looked into whether there were other names by which it had been known before and learned it was once named "Evening of Music Coordinator." However, that is too narrow a name to fit everything other than Evenings of Music under the Committee at present, namely, the 4th of July party and the three member shows in February, May and October.
As a way of clarifying the scope of the Committee, I point out that it is a rather large committee with up to 16 members annually* as follows:
1 person who will recruit and provide guidance to member show producers;
3 people who will be the producers of the member shows (this does not include the Birthday Show which, although also a member show, falls under the Minstrel Booking Committee);
11 people who host the monthly Evenings of Music; and
1 person who will host the Fourth of July picnic.
*(16 Committee members is not mandatory, but "up to 16" means that any Committee member can host more than one event, e.g. someone who produces a member show can also host the Fourth of July Picnic, or someone may host more than one Evening of Music per year, etc., making the annual Committee head count fewer than 16.)
The Committee Chairperson has responsibility for arranging locations for Evenings of Music and the Fourth of July picnic and, although under this Committee, the production of the four annual member shows is not the responsibility of the Chairperson.
Given all the above, the Committee name "Event Hosting" provides an accurate and concise description representing all the events within the scope of the Committee. By way of this report, I am requesting that this proposal be added to the November 10th Board Meeting Agenda. If a motion is necessary to accomplish this change, then the measure must be voted on at that meeting because it would make the most sense to announce the change at the December meeting. Comments are most certainly welcomed and encouraged. Thank you.
Respectfully submitted,
Christine DeLeon
