Hello, Paul & Board,
Please include Community Service Reports, submitted by Email, for both September and October.
Also, please change the name of responsible person from "Pat" to "Evelyn Maurer",{and also Mitch Radler, when applicable, for Performer Resource info).
I was very disappointed to discover that my extensive September Report, per the Minutes recently forwarded, was never even mentioned during the September Meeting, nor included in the Newsletter.
I was told, when I accepted the "Community Service Cards" position, that I would not have to attend the Meetings - just submit a Report to the Board, which I have been doing.
We had 5 Deaths of current and former Members within 1 month!
Also 1 person recovering from surgery.
Each and every one of those Individuals who died was an important, unique part of our group, whose Life mattered, and each one deserves for our Membership to know of their passing!
The most important element of our Folk Project organization, which distinguishes us from most other groups, is that we are a Community - a Family - and Community Service plays an essential role in promoting that feeling!
Regarding having Family members report GOTO info, I agree with the policy in general, but exceptions need to be made, using good judgement. And GOTO policy should not be censoring Community Service reporting in the Meeting and the Minutes!
** Doug Heacock reported Jim O'Brien's passing with an extensive, very moving tribute on Facebook, which is far more public than our FP Newsletter. Jim was Doug's "significant other" in the past, and a very active Member of FP for approx. 10 years, and many of us knew him & cared about him.
** Cathy Ballard & Bill Cox have been integral members of our FP Family for approx. 30 years, and the tragic loss of their son David matters to many of us, as demonstrated by the many FP members who attended David's Memorial Service. ** Also, Cathy & Bill have mailed a moving "Thank You" card to the entire Folk Project, which I will document in a separate Email, and which should be included in our next Newsletter, as it was addressed to "The Folk Project", and all Members should be able to read it.
** Jan Viehman and Ron Renninger were both well-known Members of our FP. Unfortunately, neither one had any known "Family Member" to report their passing, so their deaths were reported by Folk Project "Family", and each deserves to have their passing known to the general Membership.
** Steven Wexler's family did report his passing, and even suggested Donations be made to the FP in his memory and honor.
** And John Siehl's medical condition, (which has been kept confidential), was reported by his close friend and musical partner, Dave Sherman. John's been performing at Minstrel and Festival and FP Special Community Concert events for many years, as well as attending Festival frequently. I'm sure some of our Members would want to be able to wish him well.
I will resend my September Report, and also new info for October Report.
Please include it being read in the Meeting, and included in the Minutes.
Thank you,
Evelyn Maurer

Subject: Reporting deaths in good of the order
My two cents.
We’ve had a tremendous amount of loss over the past few months, and most of the deaths were not reported in the Good of the Order. Which means much of our membership may not know about it.
For many of our members, we are their family, and it is very sad to leave the world, and not have your family know about it.
Thanks,

To add another opinion to the mix, as a former magazine and book editor, I would suggest that a separate memorial be added, with its own simple graphic and surround, to announce the passing of members and family. There isn't a smooth way to comingle announcements of weddings and vacations and gigs and deaths without compromising any or all or them. Especially in the case of losing a member who was close to us all, the listing should be solemn and not shared with weddings and vacations and gigs and such.

I agree with Pat & Elizabeth and believe Mike’s idea would be an appropriate way to convey the news of peoples’ deaths in the newsletter. I also think Evelyn raises some excellent additional points that we need to consider.

Hi, Everyone,
Thanks to Pat & Elizabeth for echoing my sentiments.
Mike D - thanks for your suggestion of a separate appearing notation, regarding Deaths.
Personally, I don't care if the names are included in the written Minutes, in GOTO, or in a separate "Box", as Mike suggested - I just want them listed in our Newsletter!
I'm afraid many of us directly involved with the Board & Committees have developed "Tunnel Vision". The tendency is to forget that we are an "Elite Inner Circle", and represent only a tiny fraction of our approx. 500 Members. When people tell me "Oh, the word gets around and everyone knows", that makes me very angry. That is an absolutely unsatisfactory way for important Member News to be communicated, and again, is only heard by a very limited few - not even all of us involved with the Board can count on "catching all the 'words that get around' " !
Also, I am sure that the majority of our Members reading their Newsletter are not going to look up Committee Reports alluded to in the Minutes, having to first know how to go into the Back Office & then further how to hunt for multiple "Wikis". I believe Highlights of each Committee Report should be documented in the actual Minutes, which are published in the Newsletter. That's the way we used to do it, before everyone began taking short-cuts with electronic tools. Email can be helpful, but if we're not careful, we are sacrificing more & more of our "Human-ness" and losing all of the "personal touch", which, in my opinion, is what folk music and folk arts are all about.
We can't forget that we - the Folk Project Board - have been entrusted to represent the best interests of every Folk Project Member.
I thank you all for giving this important issue further thought.
Thanks,
Evelyn Maurer
