I recently received notice that Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) will require a new format beginning Dec.16, 2007. At that time they will only accept mini-DV or DVCAM tapes.
While I am very hesitant to add a 4th format to the HSNOI library (archive copies on DVD, circulating copies on 3/4" U-Matic & SVHS), MNN does air to a large share of our audience and I feel it represents a fair measure of our credibility with touring performers that we're cablecast in Manhattan as well as on MNN's simultaneous webcast.
A little research revealed that 60-minute standard quality mini-DV tapes run $2.50 - 3.00, while 40-minute DVCAM tapes run $12 on sale and normally $14-16 at our current supplier, which makes mini-DV the economical choice. I think this calls for FP board decision. Savings are available in a quantity of 50 higher-quality Panasonic PQ Mini DV 33 minute Tapes ($3.65 each if bought in smaller quantities) & 1 Storage Rack for $170.00 ($3.40 each) from Edgewise Media.
On Don Riemer's advice, I examined the Canon ZR800 at Unique Photo in Florham Park, and it appears adequate to the job. I also downloaded the instruction manual from Canon's website.
I'm recommending (with expert advice from Don Riemer & my research on various websites) that the Board approve purchase of Canon ZR700 Camcorder with audio & video input for $270 plus shipping from B&H or comparable Canon ZR800 for $280 available locally, 50 Panasonic PQ Mini DV 33 minute Tapes & 1 Storage Rack for $170.00 with free shipping from Edgewise Media (our current tape media supplier) or other equivalent mini-DV tape stock, and 1 Panasonic Mini DV Cleaning Cassette for $8.89.
