Dear Board,
Summer Songs was fun and went off quite well. Thanks to Scooter and Mike for allowing the Getaway Committee to throw the “party.’
Our goals were met:
- Create a fourth members performance night
- Break even (actually made a little)
- Introduce Meetup members to the Minstrel/Project
- Finished by 11:00Profit: $125-ish.
Profit: About $125
Attendance: 115, including a large staff.
The night was purposely over-planned and over-staffed because it was new and we didn’t know what would fail and what would work. We learned enough to throw a better, leaner, easier, and more profitable Summer Songs next year.
A Note on Meetup Power:
After volunteer power, the Meetup platform was the most-powerful tool in last night’s success. Besides the many first-timers that were obvious, there were many people we all know as recent Projectiles who came to the Project through Meetup, (Even before Getaway started their own.) The Getaway Meetup should be converted to The Folk Project Meetup. Project participation events are eligible under their rules. A regular Minstrel or Special Concert is not. Membership, open stage, Birthday Party, Halloween, Valentines and Chorus Night would all benefit. Evenings of Music are in members homes for members only. Although they qualify under the Meetup rules (and The Schaffers do it for Getaway), it does not appear to be good Folk Project policy to use Meetup to invite people to an EoM until they are members.
Meetup is important to mention here for three reasons:
1. The only way the Project has drawn more newbies in one night is by hiring a big name performer (also good policy)
2. The kind of participating musician attracted through Meetup has always been an essential part of our membership
3. Converting the Meetup from Getaway to the Folk Project should be done by the board, a champion or a committee, and not by Getaway Chaircouple.
Good morning, and thanks for a fun night.
Mark
