Swingin' Tern

The Swingin' Tern report for March 3:

On February 7 Dan Black called to Hot House Contras. The dance was well attended and financially successful.

Weather caused cancellation of the February 21st dance. We negotiated a lower rent for not using the hall that night, which was generous on the church's part as their expenses are higher because of snow removal costs. In summary, despite the successful dance, we lost $32 for the month.

On February 7 the Swingin Tern Committee met to consider dance promotion and financial results, a culmination of two months of discussion. These decisions were made:

  1. We will plan at least as many double and special dances as now, and hold occasional workshops of interest to more advanced dancers.

  2. We will join meetup.com and seek a volunteer to administer it.

  3. We will change our admission price to a tiered admission. Student admission will remain at $5 and adult admission $10. Anyone who wants to support the dance is invited to pay an extra $5 occasionally.

  4. At the door, we will have available a container for anyone who wants to throw in a buck or two or some loose change.

  5. We will seek individual sponsors for specific items of our dance, e.g., someone could sponsor one month or more of meetup.com. Large donations will come with two or more admissions to ST, and there will be a sign at the admission table with sponsor names.

  6. We will contact college music departments and SOBER student programs about Swingin' Tern.

During the February 7 dance announcements, we briefly told the dancers about the financial situation and informed them of some of the above. Donations were made and the dance finished with a financial gain.

The new admission sign says:

Admission $10*

*We encourage anyone who wants to lend extra support to our dance to pay $15 occasionally. This will help us continue hosting excellent bands and callers. Thank you.

An anonymous donor has sponsored the first six months of meetup.com.

Karen Justin has stepped forward to administer meetup.com.
