Subject: Naming Committee Request for Input
Following Gary's lead and in response to the large number of you who are either uncomfortable with the name that was voted on or the speed with which it was handled, I will take the following steps:
SUMMARY PROPOSAL
I ask that no article announcing the name change be placed in the April Newsletter.
I will form a very small committee to gather and filter suggested names.
We will discontinue the email free-for-all and funnel all proposals through the Committee by way of a new email forwarder: newname@folkproject.org.
I will maintain occasional contact with MUF so they are aware that we are moving on this.
DETAILS
1. I ask that no article on the name change be placed in the April Newsletter.
We will try to settle this correctly in time for the May Newsletter.
The meeting minutes, however, will be published as usual. No censorship is intended.
2. I will form a very small committee to gather and filter suggested names.
I have decided that I should chair this committee in order to get it off the ground.
Gary Pratt has agreed to be the other member of the committee, offering a fresh view of things without having "a dog in the fight". He was the one who originally proposed this approach.
We will seek comment first from those most directly affected by the name change.
As Minstrel chair, Mike Agranoff’s acceptance of committee recommendations will be paramount.
We will seek input from many of you (and others whose work will be impacted) as we narrow down suggestions. The committee will be small but input will be gathered from most (if not all) of the Board.
3. We will discontinue the email free-for-all on the issue and funnel proposals through the Committee.
A new email forwarder -- newname@folkproject.org -- has been created to receive your suggestions.
Please send your suggestions directly and only to this forwarder and not to the whole Board.
If you feel the need, please include a paragraph supporting your proposal.
4. I will maintain contact with MUF so they are aware that we are moving on this.
The aim is not give them details, just to let them know that we have not just voted to change the name and then abandoned the real work.
So put on your thinking caps and send in your ideas soon Let's see if we can get to a good place on what the new name is so we can focus our efforts on getting it out to the world
Paul
