Full Recipe:
For the Beef:
1 lb (450g) flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
1 egg
½ cup (60g) cornstarch
½ cup (60g) all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Sauce:
3 tbsp sweet chili sauce
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp chili paste (adjust to taste)
For Stir-Fry:
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece of ginger, minced
2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Prepare the Beef: In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add the thinly sliced beef to the bowl and toss until each piece is well-coated with the mixture.
Fry the Beef: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the coated beef in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the beef for about 3–4 minutes per batch until golden brown and crispy. Remove the beef from the oil and drain on paper towels.
Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and chili paste until well combined.
Stir-Fry Vegetables: In the same skillet, add a small amount of oil if needed. Add the sliced onion, red bell pepper, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the fried beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables. Toss everything together until the beef is evenly coated with the sauce and heated through.
Garnish and Serve: Transfer the crispy chili beef to a serving platter. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
