General Information Body Paragraph:

A protocol droid is a droid created to assist many sentients in multiple acts concerning other sentients. These droids were created and designed to be programmed mostly for etiquette and were mostly programmed as translators between sentients, computers, and other droids. Being designed to look like the sentients they were serving was to make it easier on the sentient.

History/Background Body Paragraph:

Roughly around the time of the Great Sith War and the Jedi Civil War in 4000 BBY, protocol droids were constructed and commonly engineered with different behavioral and situational shifts set. These would only occur when another design-generation was achieved. Quite a few of these droids were changed drastically upon the arrival of the newer generations.  One of the most successful and famous manufacturers, Cybot Galactica, was known to outfit the protocol with SyntheTech AA-1 VerboBrains which would give their droids personalities. This, in turn, would allow the droids to have emotions and give them the ability to learn making themselves very similar to the sentients that they served.

The very popular 3PO series unit was created with a TranLang III communications module that allowed the droid to be able to translate over six million languages, also allowing it to record and playback any sound that it was able to pick up. They also possessed Linguistic modules that assisted in improving speech functionality.
