During the Galactic Civil War, the Galactic Empire used the Lambda-class T-4a shuttle, also referred to as the Imperial Lambda, the Imperial Shuttle, or the Lambda-class shuttle. It was a multipurpose transport with a trihedral foil design, and it was regarded as an elegant break from the norm of savage Imperial engineering. High-ranking Imperial officials and notable figures like Emperor Sheev Palpatine and Darth Vader frequently utilized the shuttles, although stormtroopers and goods were transported on them more frequently.

The adaptable Nu-class transport, which was in service during the Clone Wars, gave rise to the conceptual and engineering progeny of the Imperial Lambda-class shuttle. Even the highest-ranking officials in the Empire, including Emperor Palpatine and his Sith trainee Darth Vader, journeyed on their own Lambda-class T-4a shuttles; the Emperor's shuttle was easily identified by its gray nasal stripe. On the planet Scarif, Governor Wilhuff Tarkin and his death trooper escort landed on Landing Pad 13 of the Imperial security facility via Lambda.

Undercover Crimson Dawn operatives Jon Melton and Bevelyn assassinated Imperial Security Bureau Major Sharin and took her Lambda-class shuttle Scopium to leak the existence of the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station. They abandoned the ship and fled to Coruscant, the Imperial capital, where the Empire would not have expected them to be, despite being pursued by TIE/IN interceptors shortly after. Lambda-class shuttles were used as troop transporters to carry Imperial ground forces to firefights throughout the surface and as evacuation shuttles from crashed Imperial spacecraft during the Battle of Jakku. Using a Lambda-class shuttle, retired Imperial Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and New Republic pilot Norra Wexley pursued Gallius Rax throughout the conflict.
