Article Theme/Topic: The Imperial Navy
General Information Body Paragraph:
The Imperial Navy was the official Galactic Navy of the First Galactic Empire. The Imperial fleet was first created during the beginning of the Clone Wars when Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine ordered the creation of the Grand Army of the Republic, since then it was transformed into the Imperial Navy after the rise of the Empire.
The Navy consisted of many Imperial I-Class Star Destroyers, Frigates, and Carriers as well as the TIE/LN Starfighters used as the main fighter ships of the Empire. Other ships included a Star Destroyer known as the ICS Executor which was the Sith Lord; Darth Vader’s personal flag ship.
The Galactic Navy not only operated on ships, but many installations, communication arrays, outposts and training facilities required naval personnel in order to maintain the area as well as communicate with other parts of the fleet. The Galactic Navy had a presence in all corners of the galaxy spanning from the Outer-Rim worlds, all the way to the Core-Worlds. Naval officers would be tasked with ensuring naval supremacy in these areas and therefore required a huge amount of manpower and leadership, naval officers would be some of the most important figures during the reign of the Galactic Empire including Grand Moff Tarkin, and Grand Admiral Thrawn who were both very valuable to the Empire and its mission.
History/Background Body Paragraph:
During the end of the Clone Wars, many ships used by the Galactic Republic were modified and used by the Empire during the early stages of the reign. Sheev Palpatine would use the obsolete “Venator-Class Republic Ship” for the time being until the Star Destroyers phased in. All the ships in the new Imperial Fleet were to be painted a grayish color and remove any old Republic insignias marking a new era to the order and Galactic Navy.
The Imperial Navy would play a huge role in destroying the remaining Separatist holdouts and would challenge the new Rebel Alliance in fights all across the galaxy. The TIE Star Fighter also was introduced and was proven to be a more technologically advanced fighter and therefore phased out the old Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V wing Star fighters. A mere 25,000 ships would be in service and operational during the height of the Galactic Empire’s rule, and ruled the galaxy with an iron fist. As the rise of Imperial Ships began, many old Republic ships were still used in service for smaller roles such as escorts, shipping and scouting out areas, and due to the immense cost and materials needed to produce one destroyer, many old ships were melted down or scrapped,
The vast cost and needed materials would eventually be the Imperial Navy’s downfall. Though technologically, and numerically superior then the Rebellion Navy it still would be a subject to many raids, and attacks. The overall cost would also drain the Empire and many ships could not operate at full capacity because of it.
Additional Information Body Paragraph
Imperial Officers were the backbone of the Imperial Navy, and therefore played a critical role in the Galactic Civil War.
Cadets would have to attend a rigorous and long Naval Academy where they would learn how to operate different ships, navigation, leadership skills, officer rules, codes, and customs, and duties of a naval officer. One of these academies was on the planet of Lothal which was later attacked by rebellion forces killing many Cadets within the program. Many Academy spots in the Inner-Rim were reserved for former Separatist occupied civilians in order to increase their loyalty to the Empire and bring them into Imperial society. The best qualified Cadets would go to the Royal Imperial Academy on Coruscant where only the top 1% would qualify for it. Upon graduation, new Lieutenants were allowed to revisit their old worlds one more time before officially joining the fleet or going to a secondary schooling/training.
