Article Title/Topic: Chiss Species
General Information Body Paragraph: The Chiss were a humanoid species similar to humans who could be identified by their flaming red eyes and blue skin. Their eyes would darken according to the amount of oxygen in their environment. Their eyes and skin tone are more vivid, the more oxygen is available. While usually jet black, their hair did occasionally turn gray as they aged (most Chiss believed that the development of gray hair was an indication of the siring of exceptional children). Their physical characteristics caused some people to wonder if they were a result of humanity's historic galactic expansions or if their physical characteristics just happened to coincide with Humans. They were a branch of humanity, according to genetic study, and it was thought that going underground caused a divergence between them and baseline Humans. Furthermore, investigation showed that exposure to glacial minerals was the cause of their particular skin tone. When they were among other humanoids, their blue skin, jet black hair, and crimson eyes usually attracted attention, making them physically stunning and easily identifiable. When compared to Humans, male and female Chiss often have stronger physiques, but they also differ in the same ways as humanoids do. Chiss were normally between 1.6 and 2.1 meters tall when completely grown. A typical adult Chiss measured 1.7 meters 36 years after the Battle of Yavin, and by 130 ABY, that height had risen to 1.85 meters for men and 1.7 meters for women on average during the next century.
History/Background Body Paragraph: Even the Chiss themselves were unaware of their origins, but some scientists theorized that they were the offspring of a long-forgotten Human colony that had perished in the mists of time. Scientists in the New Republic who believed that this colony preceded the creation of the Old Republic, as well as Chiss historians, regarded this to be the dominant hypothesis. According to research from the University of Sanbra, little is known about Chiss history because their own archives are closely guarded on their homeworld. The Chiss were a forgotten colonization attempt, according to sporadic accounts from several intrepid researchers; this notion was mostly based on the Chiss' similarity to humanity. Genetic testing eventually proved that the Chiss were in fact a descendant of the first Human attempts at colonization. A lost colony of Humans was said to have colonized the Unknown Regions of the planet Csilla before 27,000 BBY.
Additional Information Body Paragraph: The rest of the galaxy doesn't appear to have had any direct interactions with Chiss citizens, not even during the Galactic Alliance era. As was already noted, much of what was known about them came from interactions with military units and a select few high-level interactions with political and diplomatic delegations. The fact that the military and the ruling elite were the components of Chiss society that were most understood, or at least the best chronicled, may not come as a surprise.
The Rule of Law was upheld by a group of alliances known as the Ruling Families, sometimes known as the Ruling Circle, which was made up of several clans or houses. Their society was highly organized and hierarchical. Rather of biological familial units, these were divisions of their administration. The Csapla, Nuruodo, Inrokini, and Sabosen lineages were among their number, and according to some accounts, they represented bloodlines that predates contemporary Chiss culture. Every Chiss was known to identify with one of the four families, which were established by custom and location of birth. The family names were more of a cultural relic–in fact, since the lineages had become so intertwined that any Chiss could claim descent from any of the powerful houses. According to a study by the University of Sanbra, family conflicts were uncommon since no families were competing with one another and a Chiss' loyalty to one family often had little impact on their day-to-day activities. Although the Chiss liked to give the appearance of peace and order to outsiders, there were undoubtedly conflicts inside the families.
