Article Theme/Topic: Commerce Guild
General Information Body Paragraph:
The Commerce Guild was an enormous conglomerate made up of various important commercial entities, like the SoroSuub Corporation. It was known that it pressured small guilds and companies to be engulfed. After the execution of Presidente Shu Mai, the guild was dissolved and was taken over by the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY.
History/Background Body Paragraph:
The guild went back to 700 BBY, having a trading station in the Bpfassh system. When other Companies resisted the Guild, they were pressured tremendously. Similarly to other economic/trading groups, the Commerce Guild had its own security forces. The Commerce Guild was also really powerful politically, having many corrupt politicians and officials on many other planets. It had such economic power that it could even purchase planets as a whole, such as Castell, home of the Gossam. At first, the population of Castell was enslaved, but because of Shu Mai’s intervention when she was a Chief of Property Resources, many of them were freed. However, she also raised the required tribute for Gossam people. The Chief of Staff was so pleased with her job, that she was given the office of Presidente of the guild. After several negotiations, Mai managed to end Castell’s financial crisis, and it became an important center for the Commerce Guild. In 27 BBY, the Guild attempted to have complete monopoly over banking practices in the Outer Rim by introducing a bill for the approval of the Galactic Senate, and bribed several of the senators who were tasked with reviewing it. However, the law was vetoed in the end. The Commerce Guild was never brought to justice for their actions, thanks to the intervention of a Games Council member known as Bog Divinian, who wanted the guild to be indebted to him. Thanks to the guild, Divinian was elected in the Galactic Senate, however his career was forfeit when he created a petition to sever all Jedi affiliations to the Senate. This failed miserably, and it almost ended in catastrophe when two of the greatest criminal minds in the Galaxy attempted to “debate” the petition through an attack, but thankfully their plan was foiled by the Jedi. After that, the Guild stopped having any interest in Divinian. In 24 BBY, the Commerce Guild opened an office on Korriban, where Guild members deserving a punishment were sent. By 23 BBY, however, these Guild members were being constantly robbed in their hotels. Using this as an excuse, the Guild sent a droid army to Korriban, violating Republic laws. This was also the start of the corroborative relationship between Shu Mai and Count Dooku, as some of these droids were also used by him to fend off the Jedi intrusion of the Great Temple and Sith Academy on Korriban. Leading up to the Clone Wars, Mai increased the Guild’s commercial and military power greatly. She also aligned the Commerce Guild with Dooku’s Separatist movement. In 22 BBY, she was present in the meeting that would give birth to the Confederacy of Independent Systems. She knew that supporting them would mean treason against the Republic, but she couldn’t resist the possibility of wealth. During the Clone Wars, she allied the Commerce Guild with the Separatists. She also attempted to distribute trihexalon to the Galactic Senate in order to eliminate them, but the plot was prevented by a group of Jedi. After Mai’s execution in 19 BBY at the hands of Darth Vader, the Guild stopped existing, and what remained of it was absorbed by the Galactic Empire.
Additional Information Body Paragraph:
After the Commerce Guild’s dissolution, at least one employee named Iaco Stark was taken in by the Corporate Sector Authority, a political conglomerate that controlled the Corporate Sector, located in the Outer Rim territories of the Galaxy. Despite its large amount of subsidiaries and office locations, its HQ was located in Felucia.
