Article topic: The salt planet Crait
GI:
Crait is a small salt-like mineral planet in one of the most remote sectors in the Outer Rim Territories, Covered with a thick layer of white salt, causing blinding reflections in daytime and large winds which would blow up gusts of salt in plumes, over its blood red rhodochrosite crust.
Though mostly consisting of Salt flats it also features mountains, canyons and other forms of natural structures such as cave systems, in these cave systems rests sunken waterways, which could be potentially inhabited by aquatic creatures.
The atmosphere of this planet was of breathable Oxygen, hence the ability for the Resistance to land there with no respirators or the likes of, this was because solid crystals deep underground held large reserves of solid Oxygen and Nitrogen, which was slowly dissolved and released to the surface's atmosphere.
History/Background:
Little is known of Craits history, although it was once used as a hideout for the Rebel Alliance during the early days of the Empire (approx 3BBY). Though it was eventually abandoned some time before the battle of Scarif (about 0 BBY) for many many years, until the rise of the First Order. While the resistance was on the run, they hid on the planet Crait, however it did not work, and that same day that the Battle of Crait began(approx 34ABY). For many years after that the planet was abandoned, and there is no mention of it in any more recent records.
Additional information:
Given its richness in resources and minerals, there were many mines on the planet. However even with these mines there were no spaceports or orbital stations, this could suggest that those mining were not large scale companies, perhaps pirates or even the rebel alliance looking for some extra cash.
