The Null-class Advanced Recon Commandos, who numbered just six, served as the Grand Army of the Republic's prototypes and the first Jango Fett clones made by the Kaminoan cloners. The Kaminoans saw them as failures because of their genetic propensity for independent thought. Due to their extraordinary independence, they were never mass-produced; instead, Mandalorian mercenary Kal Skirata spared them from extinction and eventually adopted them all.

In an attempt to improve the Fett genes, the Kaminoans created six "uncommandable" young clones in the first production run. The group was branded as Null-class and scheduled for elimination; however, Kal Skirata, a Mandalorian training sergeant employed by Jango Fett to instruct clone commandos, prevented their demise. The 100 clones in the following batch were called the Alpha-ARCs, and Fett personally taught them.

In order to prevent the clones from acting too independently, the Kaminoans altered Fett's DNA before the clones became pregnant. This ensured that behavioral genes emphasizing traits like aggression, discipline, and loyalty would predominate. The Kaminoans changed the clones' aging process so that each null aged twice as quickly as a normal human in order to get the desired effects. A null was fit and ready for battle at 10 years old, looking like Jango Fett in his early twenties. Their eidetic memory—which enables flawless photographic recall—and higher intelligence and perception were conferred by their genetic makeup. In the course of training, their cognitive tests performed thirty-five percent better than other sorts of commandos, and throughout training, they achieved unimaginably high scores. Their mental capacities were higher than those of ordinary clones due to their extensive training and genetic makeup.
