The Maw
General Information
The Maw is a cluster of black holes. It is found in the Kessel sector of the Outer Rim Territories, specifically in the center of the Maw Nebulae. It is considered one of the wonders of the Galaxy because it is visible thanks to ionizing gasses being pulled into it. Most of the area has been saturated with radiation, strong gravitational forces, and plasma. The gravitational pull was strong enough to pull pieces off some ships' edges. Some criminals and smugglers used it as a shortcut through the Kessel Run.
History/Background
The Ones built it, a group of Celestials, who, using a station known as Centerpoint Station, would create The Maw as a prison for a being known as Abeloth. Another station within The Maw, Sinkhole Station, would be used to manage the prison from within. This took place thousands of years before the Battle of Yavin. Years later, numerous warships from Xim's Empire during the Xim Wars would go missing in this area after being pushed back to Kessel. During the Imperial Period of Galactic History, The Maw would become the site of the Imperial Grand Moff Tarkin's Maw Installation due to The Maw's inaccessibility and ease of secrecy. However, it was built in an area safe from the dangers of the cluster. Most of the Death Star would also be built in this area, though it was not completed here, but at Despayre. Near The Maw, a planetoid-wide Imperial detention base was established. It was eventually attacked by the Rogue Squadron, a flight group of the Rebel Alliance, in the year 3 ABY. This destroyed the prison and led to the escape of numerous prisoners. A superweapon known as Sun Crusher was also built in The Maw, though it would be destroyed and sucked into a black hole. Moving onto the Post-Galactic Civil War era. During the Yuuzhan Vong War. A space station known as Shelter would be built in The Maw, and Lando Calrissian would sponsor the construction. It was located at the very heart of The Maw and served not only as a place of refuge for Jedi fugitives but also served, at one point, as a housing for the wartime generation of Jedi Apprentices, alongside surviving Jedi Praxeum students. In 43 ABY, Luke and Ben Skywalker would discover Sinkhole Station and a group of Force Sensitives known as the Mind Walkers on a journey to seek answers on Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side. Not long after, the New Jedi Order would end up in a conflict with Abeloth, who was, this whole time, still trapped in The Maw. During this conflict, they would learn of the true nature and purpose of The Maw from the Kiliks.
Additional Information
Alongside Sun Crusher, other super weapons built in The Maw consist of: the World Devastators, the Tarkin, the Galaxy Gun, and the Ionic Ring Ship.
