General information

Form III, the resilience form, also known as soresu, was a defensive form created due to the improvement and popularity of blaster technology. Soresu excels at blaster deflection using circular blade movements, quick reflexes and patience, when put in Lightsaber-Lightsaber combat, this form was known to be weak since it relied on waiting for its enemy to get tired and start making mistakes leading to the opportunity to disarm or severely injure the opponent.

History/Background

Soresu was developed in 9000 BBY (The Old Republic) due to the rising popularity of blaster technology and the increase in Sith and dark side factions, leading the Jedi Order to create form III. Soresu was considered the ultimate expression of Jedi philosophy. This form was criticized due to its lack of offensive capabilities. Just before The Clone Wars began, Obi-Wan-Kenobi learned and mastered Soresu after witnessing his master die at the hands of Darth Maul due to the lack of Form IV’s defensive capabilities. By the end of The Clone Wars, Soresu was the most popular and most used lightsaber form in the Jedi Order. After Darth Vader's defeat on Mustafar, he studied Soresu and in their duel on the death star, Obi-Wan-Kenobi struggled to find an opening, leading to Darth Vader winning with a patient and decisive offence, unlike his reckless onslaught on Mustafar. This form was crucial for a Jedi to master as it helped them survive immense odds, Obi-Wan-Kenobi used this form against General Grievous and his droid army numerous times

Additional Information

During the clone wars, Mace Windu pronounced Obi-Wan-Kenobi master of Soresu. Practitioners of Soresu include Luminara Undulee, Barris Offee, Obi-Wan-Kenobi, Mace Windu, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Yoda, Kavar and Cin-Drallig. (Darth Vader implementing parts of this form into his own Djem-So variant.) This form had its advantages and disadvantages, using light cuts, evasive foot works and perfect blade placement. Since this form was developed to counter blaster fire, and the separatist droid army relied on blasters and long-ranged weapons, this form was the best form to use during the Clone Wars and increased significantly in popularity by the end. After the fall of the Galactic Republic Soresu was rarely used until the fall of The Galactic Empire and the new Jedi Order started teaching Soresu, and Soresu became a reflection of the Jedi’s past and a valuable lesson for people following their path. Zannah developed parts of soresu because her master judged her on her ‘light build’ teaching her to move the opponent's blade away instead of just blocking the attack.
