The Tie Fighters were the standardized fighter starship for the Imperials during the Galactic Civil War. These star ships have a center core where the pilot would sit with two parrel hexagons connected to the cockpit. This shape could also be thought of as a bow tie. 

History/Background Body Paragraph

The first-ever appearance of the tie fighter ship was in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope novel. These ships started to be designed and produced around 22 BBY and were inspired by other Imperial starships made by Sienar Fleet Systems. 

Additional Information Body Paragraph

These starships did not have much going for them in the shielding system, so because of this Imperial pilots would wear more advanced suits than the ones the Rebels wore.
