A landspeeder, sometimes known as an overlander or floater, was a hovering ground-based vehicle capable of going at reasonably high speeds across most terrain. It was the Hanno speeder's replacement. Low-power repulsorlifts permitted most landspeeders to hover one to two meters above the ground at all times; stationary and moving. The vehicle's propulsion was provided by turbine jet engines. Some landspeeders also carried weaponry, which was often positioned in front of the ship or above and behind the pilot and/or passengers. There were hundreds of designers, producers, and models around the galaxy, but the SoroSuub Corporation dominated the landspeeder industry before and throughout the Galactic Empire's reign.

There were several different sorts of landspeeders, ranging from sporty passenger models geared for speed and flamboyant appearance to daily utilitarian craft ranging from small speeder trucks capable of moving little goods to gigantic freighter-like transporters capable of carrying massive cargoes. There were even a few types that were either designed particularly for military usage or civilian ones that had been adapted for military use, such as the Flash speeder utilized by the Royal Naboo Security Forces.

Landspeeders were not to be confused with airspeeders, which could reach far greater heights. Speeder motorcycles or swoops worked similarly to landspeeders, however, the latter functioned more like a low-altitude airspeeder. In general, all of the aforementioned vehicle types were referred to together as speeders.
