Holocrons were objects that stored knowledge. In order to access a holocron, a user must be sensitive to the Force. In order for a user to open a Holocron and access it’s knowledge and teachings, one must form a mental link with the device.  

History/Background Body Paragraph: 

Holocrons could be used to store any kind of knowledge. The most common type of knowledge stored in Holocrons included but was not limited to: lists of names of Force sensitive children ready to be inducted into the Jedi Order when they were older, teachings about different lightsaber combat forms and philosophies, knowledge about different lesser known Force powers, as well as advice from different Jedi Masters who poured their knowledge into the Holocron before.  Due to this, Holocrons were highly guarded and kept secure in a vault in a Jedi Temple, monitored by Jedi security officers and librarians. Only members of the Jedi Council were allowed to access the vault. During the Clone Wars, bounty hunter Cad Bane was hired by Darth Sidious to steal a Holocron containing all the names of Force Sensitives children in the galaxy, however, he was unable to open it, requiring the Keeper of the Crystal, Jedi Master Bolla Ropal, who could access the Holocron to open it. Unfortunately, he refused to open it and succumbed to his injuries during torture before he opened it. Cad Bane would later be able to successfully force Anakin Skywalker to open the Holocron after taking his padawan Ahsoka Tano hostage, with Cad Bane promising to let her go in return for the opening of the Holocron. That Holocron was later recovered by the Jedi.

There were also Sith holocrons which existed. Jedi Holocrons and Sith Holocrons had very distinct differences. Jedi Holocrons were shaped like cubes while Sith Holocrons were shaped like pyramids. Jedi Holocrons had a peaceful aura and only allowed certain worthy Force sensitives to access its knowledge, while Sith Holocrons radiated with Dark Side Force energy that let any Force Sensitive no matter how unworthy to access its recordings. Sith Holocrons lured users into opening them and seducing them to the Dark Side of the Force by promising them power, forbidden knowledge and destructive Force abilities.  Even Jedi were susceptible to falling to the dark side when in the presence of a Sith Holocron. This was shown in Star Wars: Rebels, when Ezra Bridger was nearly seduced to the Dark Side by a Sith Holocron in an abandoned Sith Temple. 

Jedi Holocrons tend to be blue in colour, while Sith Holocrons tend to be red in colour, however, the Jedi Holocron retrieved by Cal Kestis containing the list of Force sensitive children was green in colour.
