Article Theme/Topic: Tarasin Species
General Information Body Paragraph:
The Tarasins were a species that walked on two legs, it was reptilian and born on Cularin. They were remotely related to the Kilassin. The Tarasins were around 1.6/1.7 meters tall, and were covered in translucent scales which allowed their color-changing skin to be visible to others. When they experienced distress, a fan of flesh and scales called Kampo was opened. This was troubling during negotiations, as Tarasins had a difficult time hiding discomfort. Their ability to change colors was useful for camouflage and communication. They usually took a brown color when relaxed or red when exerted or excited. They had short tails and spines known as sa’tosin protruding from their forearms. These gave them the ability to sense Force usage. Tarasins were curious and protective creatures, but also rarely got mad. Even though they lacked physical strength, they had incredible intelligence.
History/Background Body Paragraph:
At first, the Tarasins lived as nomads, but they decided to form another kind of society. They lived in the jungle underbrush of Cularin, grouped in clans called irstat. The first two irstat to exist had meetings in a rock which worked as a landmark, and they lived separate from each other in order to have enough food. Irstat buildings were made out of wood that could be broken down and moved easily, but the Tarasin stopped being nomadic. The eldest female of a tribe was referred to as “Mother” and considered perfection. She was the spiritual leader of an irstat, while the chief was the second eldest female, known as Irstat-Kes. While women weren’t seen as superior, this was practical as the males stayed away from home gathering resources. In time, the landmark stone became a monument, and was used to celebrate wood life. Every Tarasin religious leader had to visit at least once and take a ch’ala sprout to plant in their irstat. Tarasin were vegetarians, but they hunted kilassin for their skin or medicinal uses. At times they ate meat when with offworlders, but never the meat of kilassin. Curious as they were, many Tarasins ventured away from Cularin, but they didn’t leave for long. This made them very accepting of outside traditions and customs. At first, the offworlders were friendly with the Tarasins, but at one point they started to reap their planets’ resources, resulting in the Tarasin Revolt, which ended up granting them rights and stopping outsiders from looting the planet’s resources. After this, they returned to the irstat way of life. The Jedi Order opened an academy close to Cularin, on planet Almas. Tarasins began sending their Force Sensitive children there, and even some elders became members of the academy. The Tarasin elders, however, were worried that the younglings would find the atmosphere of the academy too intimidating, which could lead to them failing their Jedi training, and started telling them to not go. The Master of the academy, Nerra Ziveri, did everything in his power to make the Tarasin younglings feel more at ease, tending to their needs and constructing new buildings. The Tarasin elders then sent a religious leader in order to teach them their cultural heritage as well, and thus the Almas Academy became the alma mater of many Tarasin Jedi. In 34 BBY, a Tarasin male called Duus left the planet of Cularin, and was then declared a traitor of the Tarasins. Other Tarasins left Cularin as well, but were not persecuted.
Additional Information Body Paragraph:
Tarasins spoke Tarasinese, but often communicated through their color-changing skin when speaking was deemed impractical or dangerous. The Tarasins believed to have a symbiotic relationship with Cularin, and they’ve got a religion based around how much they appreciate their world. The Tarasins were strong with the Force, and before the establishment of the Almas Academy, spiritual leaders were often able to use some forms of Force abilities.
