Article Topic: Hyperdrives
General Information: A hyperdrive is a system that allows ships to reach the speed of light and move between stars using an alternate dimension called Hyperspace. In the galaxy, hyperdrives were used in society, politics, trade, and war. Hyperdrives use hyper matter particles to force ships into hyperspace. To do this, they required a hyperdrive motivator. The ship would travel through hyperspace until it reached where it was heading to. If the hyperdrive or hyperdrive motivator were destroyed, then the ship they were powering would violently go back into space wherever it ended up at. Large objects in regular space would cast something called a mass shadow into hyperspace. These mass shadows would distort hyperspace, and if you ran into one then you would usually die.
History/Background: The Purrgil, a species that was capable of traveling at the speed of light, was said to be the inspiration for the first hyperdrives. When hyperdrives made traveling faster than the speed of light possible, civilization in the galaxy started to get much better. The Old Republic sent a lot of scout ships to go and explore, and many more civilians from the Core Worlds were able to seek a better life. Hyperdrives later became so advanced that you could travel even faster across a galaxy over 100,000 light-years across.
Additional Information: Hyperdrives had ratings called classes. If a class was low, that meant that the engine was faster. Most civilian ships had Class Three or higher hyperdrives, while ships from the government and military had a Class Two or Class One Hyperdrive. The Imperial I-Class Star Destroyer had Class 2 hyperdrives, while interestingly enough, the First Death Star had a Class 4 hyperdrive. Han Solo’s famous Millennium Falcon had an exceptionally fast Class 0.5 hyperdrive
