Astromech droids are a type of droids that serve as mechanics on starships. They were also called mechs or astro droids. 

These droids had tools built inside them that could be used for simple repairs. They helped them control the systems and flight inside a starship. 

The job of an astromech droid was to assist the pilot of the ship as a co-pilot. The only way to communicate with the pilot was through the spaceship's computer system. In this way, the binary code of an astromech droid could be translated into another language, or it could also be translated by a protocol droid if it knew the binary language.

Astromech units have been used since the Old Republic. One of the most famous astromech droids is R2-D2, an R2 unit. Astromech units have been used in X-Wing starfighters, Naboo starfighters, etc. The most popular astromech models were used from R1 series to R-9 series.

The average height of the R1-R9 series astromech droids was almost 1 meter, while the P2 units reached almost the same height as a human.
