The Venator Class Star Destroyer, also referred to as the Republic Attack Cruiser, or Republic Star Destroyer, was the backbone of the Galactic Republic’s naval forces during the clone wars. Employed by Jedi Generals as their flagships, this multi-role attack cruiser played a crucial role in defending republic territory. Serving as a carrier role, a large flight deck along with hangers accommodate a large complement of fighters, gunships, and shuttles, allowing the republic to have fighter superiority over the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

History/Background Body Paragraph:

Designed by Lira Wessex to feature the classic double wedge design and perform a large array of combat and support roles. The venator was the first of all Star Destroyer classes to be manufactured at Kuat Drive Yards in the year 22 BBY. Though unlike the Acclamator-class assault ship, the Venator wasn’t introduced at the beginning of the clone wars, and was missing for the first battle of Geonosis. Many believe this was for plausible deniability purposes, as building such a large fleet of ships in the pre-clone wars error would be difficult to hide. When the age of the Republic ended with Darth Sidious' purge of the Jedi order, the Venator’s were absorbed into the imperial navy during the early stages of the empire, removing all color to the ship, and in the process removing any symbolism referring to the old Jedi Order. These imperial venators would soon be phased out and replaced with the Imperial 1 Class Star Destroyer by 14 BBY, serving as the new backbone of the Imperial Navy.

The venator was a 1000 meter long attack cruiser, featuring powerful deflector shields, and a wide range of weaponry. This weaponry included eight double-barrel DBY-827 heavy turbolaser turrets, four on either side of the bridge area, and was the Venators primary source of firepower. Another form of firepower came from an AV-7 Anti-vehicle Artillery Cannon, which could be placed in the hangar and was originally an idea that came from Anikan Skywalker. The venator was also equipped with at least 52 point-defense laser cannons for anti-starfighter purposes, and two sets of medium duel turbolasers located along the hull trench. Four heavy proton torpedo launchers and six tractor beam projectors could additionally be found as part of the combat apparatus. Finally, the venator was equipped with a class 1 hyperdrive, outcompeting ships of the CIS, with the Providence-class having a class 1.5 hyperdrive.
