The ships will move through hyperspace until they reach their intended target. However, if the hyperdrive or hyperdrive is exploited, the ship will violently return to normal, potentially ending up in a previously unexpected position. Large objects in regular space often send mass shadows into hyperspace, causing mutated forms that can be fatal if encountered.

The Old Republic sent many scout ships to explore, and civilians from the Core Worlds were able to seek better opportunities in other areas. Over time, hyperdrive has evolved to the point where crossing a galaxy spanning more than 100,000 light years has become possible. Most modern superdrive reactors have a coaxium coated main chamber, significantly improving their performance. Larger models, such as the SSP05 and T-14, use stacked stabilizing plates to channel metamatter through thin effector channels, charging ions in the main engine to the speed of light. The navigation computer controls the energy output of the hypermatter and the jump itself, ensuring a safe trip and return to real space. Smaller ships such as fighters and bombers rely solely on hyperdrives, with power provided by the ship's standard reactor. Independent thrusters, such as the R300-H hyperdrive of the BTL-A4 Y-wing fighter and the GBk-585 hyperdrive of the T-65B X-wing fighter , are examples of this configuration.
