Kuat Drive Yards was one of the largest shipyards in the galaxy, among other large shipyards such as Corellia and Fondor.

Kuat held onto the military production industry with an iron grip, serving the Republic as well as the Galactic Empire. The massive industrial ring around the planet of Kuat was capable of producing nearly anything needed to make a powerful navy, from battleships such as the Imperial Star Destroyer, to massive dreadnoughts such as the Executor Class Super Star Destroyer. In 5 ABY Kuat was attacked by the New Republic due to its strategic importance to the Imperial remnant. The New Republic defense force led by Admiral Gial Ackbar and Commodore Kyrsta Agate were able to seize the shipyard after the surrender of governor Moff Pollus Maksim and the guild head of KDY. Grand Admiral Rae Sloane opened peace negotiations between the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic. After these events unfolded, KDY would go on to serve the New Republic through their years of power.

In the year 800 BBY Kuat Drive Yards would purchase the planet of Rothana, creating their subsidiary Rothana Heavy Engineering. Rothana Heavy Engineering would be known for producing vehicles such as the All Terrain Tactical Enforcer (AT-TE) and Low Altitude Assault Transport (LAAT) as well as its many variants. Kuat had held a strong relation with the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, helping to build the Republic Navy years before the Clone Wars would begin. The leaders of Kuat as one would assume went with the sith in disguise, Darth Sidious after the transition into the Galactic Empire helping to create new various ships to fit the Tarkin Doctrine of ruling by fear.

The Kuati people were able to force back a Rakata invasion during their conquest of expansion. Many years before the Clone Wars, at the Eridau Conference multiple Trade Federation leaders were assassinated by members of the Nebula Front, a radical anti-corporation group.
