Bleeding is a dark side technique used when a Sith steals a Jedi’s Kyber Crystal and bends the Kyber to the Sith’s will, turning it red. 

Though rare, it is possible for a Jedi to save this Crystal by using another technique called “Purifying.” once a Jedi purifies the Crystal, it will turn white, signalling that the Crystal is no longer controlled by the Dark Side.

All Kyber Crystals are naturally attuned to the light side of the force, so the Sith must earn their sabres by killing a Jedi and taking their Crystal and even lightsaber. Once they have both, the Sith must pour all their hatred, anger, pain and fear into the Crystal, corrupting it.

The technique is not one hundred per cent successful all the time. At times, Kyber crystals have exploded or shattered during the process; other Crystals have defied the Dark Side and simply refuse to bend to the Sith’s will. 

History/Background Body Paragraph:

A bled crystal was first discovered during the High Republic Era by a Jedi named Jora Malli, who came across an ancient Sith Lightspear. She would try to unwind the effects of this bled Crystal in an attempt to learn how the process worked, but she accidentally purified the Crystal. It is said that a purified Crystal has a stronger bond to the Jedi that purified it than an average Kyber Crystal.

When Darth Vader attempted to bleed a Kyber Crystal, it fought back against him and gave him light side force visions in an attempt to turn him back to the light side,  but Vader quickly saw through them and conquered his Crystal, turning it crimson.

Additional Information Body Paragraph:

Any force user can bleed a Crystal even if the Crystal came from your own sabre. However, in Sith culture, you must earn your sabre by killing a Jedi and then bleeding their Crystal, making it your own.

The bleeding procedure could damage the Crystal, causing it to crack like what happened with Ben Solo, making the Kyber Crystal unstable, which is why Kylo Ren used the Crossguard Sabre.
