Article Theme/Topic: Great Hyperspace Disaster
General Information Body:
The Great Hyperspace Disaster—also referred to as the Great Disaster, the Legacy Run tragedy, or the Hetzal Prime evacuation—occurred in 232 BBY, during the High Republic Era. During this catastrophe, many moons in the Trymant system, including Korbatal, were destroyed. Massive debris was flying into the Hetzal system, threatening every living being there and necessitating a massive rescue effort.
Background/History Body:
Built by Kaniff Yards more than a century ago, the Class A modular freight carrier Legacy Run was in continuous operation for a considerable amount of time before the Byne Guild acquired it. Under the command of former Malastare-Sullust Joint Task Force officer Hedda Casset, the ship made many journeys without incident. But even with all the attempts to keep it running, the Legacy Run was running its course. About nine thousand people from the Core Worlds and Colonies, as well as goods like supercooled liquid tibanna, were transported by it on its last voyage to the Outer Rim Territories.
Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh oversaw the Galactic Republic at that time with an expansionist agenda, hoping to reach a wider audience across the galaxy for both the Republic and the Jedi Order. In the Outer Rim's frontier, work on the space station Starlight Beacon was started in accordance with this goal. When everything was over, the Republic and the Jedi called a conclave aboard the station, and many notable people showed up, including Jedi Master Avar Kriss and Republic Defense Coalition Admiral Pevel Kronara. Shai Tennem, the overseer of the station's construction, caused a delay in the dignitaries' departure, including that of Kriss and Kronara, as well as the admiral's vessel, the Third Horizon, when the conclave ended.
Originating in the outer rim, the Nihil became a well-known pirate group and has been more well-known lately. With the use of sophisticated Path engines, they were able to launch quick attacks and avoid detection thanks to their extraordinary ability to maneuver via elusive hyperspace Paths. Marchion Ro, the commander of the Nihil, had goals beyond piracy, despite their reputation as marauders. Ro's aims, rooted in his family history, were to aim the Jedi and Republic, laying the groundwork for larger conflicts.
When disaster struck, the Legacy Run was following a well-known path through hyperspace. Cadet Kalwar, the navigator, notified Captain Casset of an unexpected obstruction in the hyperlane just as she was taking over the bridge from her first officer, Jary Bowman, giving her a few seconds to respond. The crew had no idea that this obstruction was a Nihil Stormship traveling down a hyperspace Path. She was surprised, but not surprised, as there was a lot of traffic in the lane and it was extremely unlikely that this would happen. Casset took over the Legacy Run and tried to steer it away to prevent a collision. She nearly succeeded, but the ship's advancing years eventually caused it to break apart. Casset and her colleagues on the bridge were able to block off different areas of the ship before dying when the bridge collapsed, not knowing if any people had survived. Scattered across hyperspace, remnants of the Legacy Run finally reemerged into actual space, creating massive disturbance.
An enormous flood of anomalies in hyperspace threatened to destroy the three-star Hetzal system, which was located in the Outer Rim Territories. Two scan techs stationed on the outer ecliptic of the system, Merven Getter and Vel Carann, first noticed the abnormalities and issued a system-wide warning. Unfortunately, before they could offer any more explanation, debris from the emergence from hyperspace destroyed their monitoring station, taking their lives.
The Hetzal system's residents were perplexed about the approaching danger as a result of the alarm. At the Ministerial Residence on Hetzal Prime, Minister Zeffren Ecka and his advisers made an effort to ascertain the circumstances. Eventually, a map showing the distribution of debris and its disruptive effect on the system was created with help from Keven Tarr of the Ministry of Technology. This prompted Ecka to order a system-wide evacuation, which created panic because there weren't enough starships to take in the enormous forty billion people, many of whom were unaware of what was happening. Because they thought the evacuation order was a fake, several locals rejected it. Ecka's administration still sent out a distress signal despite their best efforts, but they had little expectation of receiving prompt aid from the Republic considering how far away the system was.
Hetzal's distress call caused the Third Horizon, which was transporting Jedi and nobles, to reroute to conduct a rescue effort. Master Kriss and more than a hundred Jedi and Republic staff members reacted. When the Longbeam cruisers and Jedi Vectors arrived, Kriss used the Force to coordinate their deployment.
The rescue crews originally scattered around the system to assist where required, not fully understanding the nature of the abnormalities. Among the noteworthy actions were the assistance provided by Captain Bright's Aurora IX to damaged infrastructure and the intervention of Jedi Master Greatstorm during a difficult situation at the Ranoraki complex.
The expedition was put on hold after Padawan Agaburry detected lifeforms inside the anomaly during preparations to destroy it. When Kriss revealed that there were other people captive, the goal became freeing them together with the Hetzalians. The Adrens' expert flying and the Jedi's telekinetic maneuvers worked together to save lives, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to rescue missions.
With four Jedi to deliver to the Beacon, the Byne Guild transport vessel encountered an unplanned hyperspace departure and found itself trapped in deep space. Concerns were raised since Guild head Scover Byne, Hollow's adoptive mother, frequently came onboard the ship. Leox Gyasi, the captain of the spacecraft, and copilot Affie Hollow recognized the wreckage speeding through hyperspace as relics of the Legacy Run. Distress calls, including one from a spacecraft that had become stuck in the Bespin system, could be heard around the galaxy while the catastrophe was taking place.
The Trymant system was doomed, with hyperspace debris destroying moons like Korbatal. Similar to this, the Koboh system suffered when pieces of its moon collided with Koboh due to an Emergence. When Republic scientists sought safety at a lunar research facility, the Jedi Council ordered the system's complete evacuation.
Additional Information Body Paragraph:
Even after the Hetzal system was saved, pieces of the Legacy Run continued to emerge at random times from hyperspace, which led to a series of emergencies. Chancellor Soh deemed the danger serious enough to order a ban on hyperspace travel over large swaths of the Outer Rim, with a dedicated task force formed to handle the situation.
