General Information Body Paragraph

Starkiller Base was the pinnacle of First Order military engineering. Its internal structure was carved into the ice planet of Ilum (an important Jedi outpost) and the base utilized the ancient energy that came from the planet to power itself. Prominent First Order leaders: Armitage Hux, Kylo Ren and Phasma held command of the base in an unofficial joint operation. The base was intentionally designed to be superior but similar to the Empire’s Death Star stations as a ploy by the First Order to prove they have come further than their predecessors both in technology and overall dominance. To fire the main weapon (which was capable of destroying multiple star systems at once, a sizable upgrade to DS-1) an opening in the planetary shield would have to be created, allowing the beam to pass through. 

History/Background Body Paragraph

Ilum (the host to Starkiller Base) was a relatively forgotten planet in the Unknown Regions at the time of the First Order, having been used as a mining planet by the Empire to harvest the kyber crystals that lay in underground reserves. The result of this mining left a sizable equatorial trench in the planet’s crust, being visible from orbit. This trench was of optimal capacity for the First Order to place a weapon of mass destruction. After the fall of the Empire, First Order founders located logs detailing specifications about Ilum and sent scouts to find the planet as it had the exact parameters the Order needed. When the planet had been cleared for First Order operations, mass excavations to extract the remnants of the Kyber deposits took place. When completed, groundwork began for the superweapon.

Additional Information Body Paragraph

Powering the weapon was a type of dark energy called “quintessence” which could be found everywhere in the galaxy, it could provide unlimited power for the First Order. The base gathered its dark energy from stars, using collectors to gather dark energy in processed stages and would redirect it to the planetary core. The power was contained in place by the magnetic field of the planet, which was aided by a thermal oscillator.
