Yes, unfortunately, not everyone knows the story of the creation of the ingenious Ukrainian hit "Cheremshina" and its authors...
The author of the words of the song “Cheremshina” Nikolay Yuriichuk in 1964, having become a disabled person of the second group after working at the Zhezkazgan mines, returned from Kazakhstan to his hometown of Vashkovtsy in Bukovina, some 30 kilometers from the famous Vyzhnytsya. Nikolai showed one of his poems to a friend-Vasily Mikhaylyuk. “Look, maybe you will come in handy,” he said. However, the text of the song, which will be loved and known by heart, not only in Ukraine, but also beyond its borders, was in the box for a year. The melody came to Mikhailuk in 1965, when he was collecting meadow herbs. The composer rushed home, sat down at the piano, played a tune, and then quickly wrote down notes on paper. Thus was born "Cheremshina", which was performed by Ivan Kozlovsky and Sofia Rotaru, Kvitka Tsisyk and Alexander Malinin ... In Vashkovtsy alone she was sung by Chingiz Aitmatov and Plato Mayboroda,
Picturesque Vashkovtsy are located on the right bank of the Cheremosh River.
“Just cross the Cheremosh, and nature already sings ,” said the author of the music for the song “Cheremshina” Vasily Mikhaylyuk .-She inspired everyone: Stepan Sabadash, Levka Dutkivsky, members of the Smerichka group, Volodya Ivasyuk, Sofia Rotaru, Lilia Sandules, Nazariy Yaremchuk.
This Bukovinian beauty inspired Nikolai Yuriychuk to write a poem full of tenderness: “Everywhere the rampant ramshackles were everywhere, the viburnum climbed to the porch...”
“Actually, the text was not song at all ,”the composer later admitted.-Complex size, stress...But the poem captured me.
“My mother and I stood at the door and listened to how the melody is born, ”recalls the daughter of the composer Lydia .-Papa then said that at that moment it was not bird cherry that seemed to him, but our mother in wedding attire, walking towards him.
The first listeners were the composer's relatives. And soon the song was appreciated by Nikolai Yuriychuk. The co-authors sang a duet “Cheremshina” (the name of the song) ten times in a row. Rejoiced and proud of each other, like children.
Mikhaylyuk then worked as the head of the brass band and choir of the Vashkovetsky City House of Culture. The next day at the rehearsal, the premiere took place. The soloist Nina Nechiporenko, who worked as a railway cashier in the district center of the Chernivtsi region, simply and heartily sang Cheremshina.
“In the same 1965, we went to Kiev with a choir to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Bukovina with Soviet Ukraine, ” Vasily Mikhaylyuk recalled.-There “Cheremshina” was heard by Dmitro Gnatyuk. He gave her wings: thanks to him, the song flew around the world.
The song has become one of the most beloved in Ukraine, but throughout the Soviet Union. Since then, a rare concert at Gnatyuk dispensed with the execution of a super popular hit.
“This is the song of my soul, ” said Dmitro Hnatiuk.-I always sang it with such pleasure, with such love...
Fell in love with "Cheremshina" and the famous Ivan Semenovich Kozlovsky, a native of Kiev region. When, together with Vasily Mikhaylyuk, on the stage of the Hall of Columns in Moscow, he led “Vіvcharya to the little garden, in a quiet little wardrobe waiting for the devine, waiting”, he even shed tears of joy and pride for the Ukrainian countrymen.
And with what feeling the Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov sang “Cheremshina”! First, in a duet with the author of music in Vashkovtsy, and then in the Carpathian village of Rusov, Ivano-Frankivsk region, where both were invited to the opening of the monument to the famous Ukrainian writer Vasyl Stefanik.
But the most sincere “Cheremshina” sounded in the composer's house, where Nikolai Yuriychuk was always a welcome guest. More than once, the author of another national hit, "My mother, you haven’t slept at night..." sang along with his soulful voice, composer Plato Mayboroda. Or Oles Gonchar, who loved to sing in full voice. I heard the hospitable house of Mikhaylyuk singing Dmitry Gnatyuk and Anatoly Solovyanenko. Recognized masters never refused to give concerts in front of the Vychivtsi, because the authors of the song, which had incredible success, lived there. It was enough to announce at the concert: “Vasily Mikhaylyuk, Nikolay Yuriichuk. “Cheremshina,” as the audience exploded in a flurry of applause.
“I would like to bow my head before the talent of the authors, ” admitted Russian singer Alexander Malinin.- Thanks for the song. She became an unfading hit for all time. Wherever Ukrainians live and no matter what distant lands their fate has abandoned, everywhere they will readily sing it. "Cheremshina" entered the gold fund of Ukrainian culture. It is a pity that I could not say a word of thanks to the authors, we never had a chance to meet.
By the way, after three times in a row-from 1966 to 1968- Kiev Dynamo won gold medals of the All-Union Football Championship, the fans composed a song for the beloved team and sang it everywhere:
Everywhere violently play kiyani,
Do not be scared forwards titanium.
Bibu i Munteana, Sabo y Porkuyana
Wait for the medal, wait ...
Subsequently, other repercussions of “Cheryomshins” appeared-political (“Znach Banderi had a little voice in Lisi, Khloptsi know the machine gun at strisi...”), social (“Everywhere violently qіtne dіdіvschina”).
August 17, 1969 in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium, the team of the first league “Karpaty” (Lviv) won the Rostov SKA in the USSR Cup final. Together with the final whistle, Karpat fans, who were more than 30 thousand in the stands of the Lenin Stadium, sang Cheremshina with tears in their eyes. And with them at the TV screens cried with happiness, it seems, the whole of Ukraine.
For half a century that has passed since the creation of the song masterpiece, "Cheremshina" is not outdated-it is loved today.
“I was lucky to collaborate with talented creators, ” says Sofia Rotaru .-Among them are original Bukovinian authors: composer Vasily Mikhaylyuk and poet Nikolai Yuriichuk. I sing their “Cheryomshin” along with the songs of the unforgettable Volodya Ivasyuk. Cheryomshina has been living in my repertoire for so long, because it is a real pearl of song art. Of course, every time I prepare a new program, I execute it in a new modern arrangement, but all the time I try to preserve the pristine beauty. It is difficult to find a similar song, which operas and pop singers would love equally, and often sang at the festive table. I am pleased when in a distant country from the speakers on the bus it suddenly sounds: “Everywhere is wildly sweet cherry...” In Canada, America, Israel or Australia-wherever the fate of our fellow countrymen has abandoned, they listen to this song with tears in their eyes, they ask them to perform also again.
The song has become truly folk. If Nikolay Yuriichuk and Vasily Mikhaylyuk didn’t create anything else, then this song alone would put them on a par with our other outstanding compatriots Olga Kobylyanskaya, Yuri Fedkovich, Dmitry Gnatyuk, Ivan Mikolaichuk, Levk Dutkivsky and many others who glorified our land.
Honor your father and your mother...We often forget this divine commandment when it comes to parents...of songs. Vasily Mikhaylyuk had a difficult fate. In the war - the son of the regiment, after the victory of 11 years he served in the army. In less than 40 years, shortly after the resounding success of Cheryomshiny, he was paralyzed and received a second disability group. In the 1960s, the composer and his co-author received fantastic fees (sometimes a thousand rubles a month). In the Soviet years, Mikhailuk was assigned a personal pension of republican significance. And during the time of Ukrainian independence, he received scanty money, which he completely spent on the treatment of a serious illness.
And the poet Nikolai Yuriychuk long knocked out a disability pension. "Cheremshina"-the only monument to him.
In our history, it has happened more than once that songwriters who have become truly popular are rarely remembered. For example, Stepan Rudansky was sued by such a song with his song “Take It, Go to Ukraine”, Semyon Klimovsky-the author of “Saving a Cossack for the Danube”, Mikhail Petrenko (his piercing ballad “I am amazed at heaven” exists for nearly two hundred years). One can’t recall the Poltava fabulist Leonid Glibov, the creator of the thought “Stand high,”Roman Savitsky, who, under the influence of great love, wrote “Hutsul Ksenia” in the early 1930s...
Before leaving life, bedridden Nikolai Yuriychuk destroyed almost all the manuscripts-more than 100 poems that were never published. The heart of this gifted Bukovinian poet stopped beating on November 30, 1997. And on May 2, 2003, his friend and co-author Vasily Mikhaylyuk died. The poet and composer, inseparable in life, rest close at the city cemetery in their native Vashkovtsy.

The cherry tree-Ukrainian song-Lyrics: Mikola Yakobovich Yuriechuk-Hebrew: Anton Paperni-Melody: Vasyl Filipovich Mikhailuk-Singing: Izzy Hod-Arranging, playing, editing and recording: Meir Raz.
Notes written by Izzy Hod: The cherry tree, is a Ukrainian romance, depicting a romantic picture of a girl waiting for her shepherd lover as she walks in the orchard of bird-cherry trees and enjoys the sight of flower clusters and their smells. The song, is one of the most beloved and famous song in, Ukraine and has already received the special status, of a folk song, because of its popularity. The poet, Mykola Yakobovich Yuriechuk, worked for a living, in digging works and in 1964, was injured at work, became disabled and unable to work permanently and returned home. Out of inaction, Yuriechuk, began writing songs, without expecting them to be publish, but in the hope that in the future the songs would be valuable. The songs also reached the friend of the poet, the composer, Vasyl Filipovich Mikhailuk, and he, collected them in a box and abandoned them. A year later, in 1965, while walking in one of the meadows in his residence, the melody that matched the lyrics came up. He ran home, sat down at the piano and composed the song. Mikhailuk, arrived in, Kiev, in 1965 and met there, the one who became the national baritone singer of, Ukraine, Dmitry Mikhailovich Gnatyuk, and he who turned the song, into a romance and a national folk song in, Ukraine. The literal description of the words of the song is as follows, One cuckoo made her voice heard and the swallow reached her nest. A shepherd now passes with his flock on the path and the nightingale sings his song softly as evening falls. The cherry trees are blooming everywhere, like a brightly dressed groom they are adorned and while evening falls, the shepherd waits for the beautiful shepherd girl. In the evening the shepherd girl went to the cherry orchard as she turned her gaze to the nearby ridge. All the maple trees there were covered with dew resembling tears, she picked one flower and braided it in her hair. The cherry trees are blooming everywhere, like a brightly dressed groom they are adorned and while evening falls, the shepherd waits for the beautiful shepherd girl. In the horizon the sun began to set and the shepherd girl heard the shepherd sing these words, when my flock will fell asleep in the sheepfold in the night, then I will come to your garden. The cherry trees are blooming everywhere, like a brightly dressed groom they are adorned and while evening falls, the shepherd waits for the beautiful shepherd girl. In the sky it is dark in the evening and in the river the flock drinks water. The shepherd girl stands there in the cherry garden in front of the shepherd she loves. The cherry trees are blooming everywhere, like a brightly dressed groom they are adorned and while evening falls, the shepherd waits for the beautiful shepherd girl.
