GRB's Oswego County Academic Youth (OCAY) League team came back with a second place finish after the competition on October 10.
The OCAY League is an academic competition among the schools in Oswego County.
Advisor Ms. Dauphin explained the idea behind the academic league. She said, “We have all these athletic competitions and we should give just as much glory and recognition to academic achievements as we do our athletic competitions.”
This year, the group's first competition was literature-based. Fulton's team included strong students from three grade levels and included junior Zach Eggleston, sophomore Alexis Ingersoll, junior Griffin Mariner, junior Wesley Van Buren, junior Samantha McRae, senior Mark Tallents, and sophomore Quinn Halstead.
There were many events that were part of the competition such as presenting about literature, making a cover for a book and pitching their book premise, and taking quizzes based on literature. The OCAY League has four competitions each year and each is based on a different topic.
The students had a great time competing, but were also nervous.
McRae said, "When we first got there we were all nervous because they said the topic was literature and we are not confident in that subject."
This was also McRae's first time participating, but she had a great experience and said, “I didn't know what to expect, but I ended up having a lot of fun because I was with new people and there was pressure. When we won it was a great feeling that we accomplished second place after being not being super confident.”
Congratulations!
