The Raider wrestling team went to the SRC Arena to compete in the Section championship tournament on Saturday, February 9. The team won its fifth consecutive Section 3 Division 1 tournament title as well as four individual section titles.
Senior Captain Nick Noel defended his section title. Junior Cameron Galvin also won his second straight title. Galvin said, “I didn't get scored on and pinned my way through the tournament.” Sophomore Dominick Hofmann won his second section title.
Sophomore Sam May had possibly the most dramatic win of the season and won his first section title. May was seeded fourth in the tournament and after his quarterfinal match, he faced the number one seed, Steve Pascarella of Liverpool. He beat Pascarella, who was a Class AA champ with a score of 12-9. He faced off against Whitesboro’s Jeff Robinson who May had lost to in the finals of the Class A tournament only a week before. May was injured midway through the match and was forced to either forfeit the match or continue wrestling. He went on to pin his opponent to become a section champion. Head Coach Mr. Waldron said, “It was the talk of the tournament."
The Raiders showed their dominance throughout the tournament. They won a third of the matches via pin and scored 128 more points than the second place team, which solidified Fulton's reputation as one of the top wrestling programs in the state. The team had eight additional wrestlers place in the tournament.
The four section champions will be preparing over the next couple of weeks for the state tournament in Albany.
Senior Nick Noel said he will be doing two practices a night for the rest of the season in order to get ready for the tournament.
Second place finishers Cuinn Burlingham and Cole French, as well as third place finishers Thomas Hughes and Kaleb Carreon, may also be selected as wild cards.
The state tournament will be held at the Times Union Center in Albany on February 22 and 23.
