On Thursday, March 14, GRB’s Math Club had their annual celebration for Pi Day. They celebrated Pi Day by eating many pies, as well as doing their usual math problems and relay, but there was a special twist at the end. The event finished with pieing teams in the face. The incentive for getting pied was five extra points being added to his or her team's point total.
At each meeting throughout the year, the teams compete by solving math problems. For each problem, if the team is correct, they will be awarded points toward their totals. At the end of the year, the team with the greatest sum of points will be the winners for that year.
Each year, Pi Day is celebrated as a way to commemorate this day that is so beloved by math enthusiasts. March 14 was picked for this holiday as the first three digits of pie are 3.14, which would correspond to the third month (March) and the 14th day. This day also celebrates the creator of Pi, Archimedes, who was a highly prestigious mathematician.
Math Club is available to those of all math levels from Algebra II and up. The club meets once a month, and each meeting is always accompanied by many snacks and drinks.
Senior Jenna Ruzekowicz said, “Math Club is arguably one of the most enjoyable clubs at GRB. This past week, we ate our body weight in delicious pie to celebrate pi. It was beyond fun and Mrs. Ryan goes all in each year.”
“The Pi Day celebration is one of my favorite parts of Math Club. It is a fun tradition that I am glad I got to be a part of,” senior Shaylee Cealie said.
Senior Keara Patterson said, "Math Club is a great opportunity to further your math knowledge while having a good time with your friends."
