There is a new system in place at G. Ray Bodley High School, which will allow students to borrow books from the school for summer reading. All reading materials qualify, including fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, and even magazines.
Students have until June 25 to borrow materials and books. The books are due back on September 13, but there is an expanded checkout limit. See the library staff for details.
This is a good program because it is promoting reading on your own time at no cost to you. Many students do not read enough while outside of school and this gives them the opportunity to do just that.
Librarian Mrs. Scalfaro stated, "Research shows that it's not enough to tell students to read over the summer. We need to get books into their hands. Access to reading materials is crucial for preventing 'Summer Slide,' which refers to the loss of reading and other academic skills that occurs over the summer when students don't read."
She added, "Reading is like any other skill. You need to practice or you'll lose the ability to perform well. Not everyone can get to the public library, so I'm making sure if kids want books they get them before they leave school."
This is not limited to the students either. Staff can borrow books, too. The library also offers audiobooks and ebooks. See Mrs. Scalfaro for details.
Have fun reading, GRB!
