This new “coronacation” has forced us GRB students to develop new habits, hobbies, and entertainment. Below are four identical interviews with Persons A, B, C and D. Find out who these mystery students are at the end of the article!
Without revealing who you are just yet, tell us about yourself.
A: I'm a sophomore and I'm 16. I'm a high honor roll student and I spend most of my time studying. I am a member of LOTE Club, Yearbook Club, and I will be rejoining FBLA next year. And I am a past member of the Pride Club. I am also a violinist in the symphonic orchestra.
B: I’m a senior at GRB. I am currently enrolled in three AP classes and play viola in the symphonic orchestra. I also participate in clubs such as the Yearbook Club, Math Club, and Environmental Club.
C: I am a junior at GRB High School. I take two college level classes and I play trumpet for the wind ensemble and jazz band. I participate in extracurricular sports and the Yearbook Club. I’m very focused on my future in music, but sometimes get distracted from my primary instrument by other instruments of course!
D: I'm a senior at GRB and in the fall I will be attending Ithaca College. At GRB, I’m a member of Choir and Wind Ensemble, and I take one AP class. Outside of music, I enjoy Spanish, running, and reading.
What was your first thought about school closing?
A: Honestly, I was really excited to get a break from stress. Home learning is very relaxed. I'm also happy that we’re all safe from the pandemic!
B: At first I was a little mad! I was worried about my AP classes becoming more difficult to learn the topics online. I was also worried about not being able to see my friends and being stuck at home all the time.
C: Initially, I thought things were going to be very difficult and unnecessary. I didn’t see the gravity of the situation.
D: I was honestly expecting it. I am glad we closed when we did instead of waiting. I was nervous as to the change to online working. I was very nervous about how this would affect my grades and performance on the upcoming AP exam.
How do you feel about school being closed now?
A: I’m still content and relaxed being home all the time, but I'm worried about passing our regents exams, and how we will take these tests. I’m aware that these tests are cancelled for June, but they’re required to graduate so I'm anxious as to how these tests will be made up.
B: I think it's for the best. It's the best way to control everything that's going on. And I think most of the teachers are doing a good job with distance learning. Mrs. Ryan and Mr. Mainville especially are doing a fantastic job helping us as students.
C: Now I feel like it's more of a serious situation and I have so much sympathy for the seniors losing out on their last year.
D: I mean I'd say I'm disappointed. It's coming very close to us losing graduation and everything that comes with it. Like the graduation walk and the senior dinner dance. However, I understand that this is a small price to pay for the health of others.
Why do you think it's important for students to be social distancing?
A: So I think it's important as the youth are the biggest carriers. To be staying at home is to keep us all safe! It's a lot easier to contract the pandemic at school. Staying at home protects our elderly family or younger siblings.
B: I think it's important because everyone knows the best way to keep people safe is to stay home.If we all stay home now it will make it so we don't have to stay home longer!
C: To make sure that we can flatten the curve! We need to protect ourselves and our loved ones!
D: It's important because even if you aren’t sick you can still be passing it to others! If you aren’t worried about other people’s families, think of your own! Why would you risk the health of your own family?
What new things have you done or learned during quarantine to stay busy?
A: Well for my online classes I have been watching a lot of videos and reading a lot of articles online to make up for the lack of in-person instruction. But honestly I’ve been watching a lot of TV… a lot of Netflix! Right now I’ve been binging Once Upon a Time and On My Block! As well as the occasional anime.
B: I have learned a new song on my guitar! The first weekend that was sunny I stayed outside and did a lot of gardening! I spend a bit of time on my phone and I actually have a lot of school work. I've been doing some reading too!
C: I have been practicing a lot of trumpet and technique. I also learned that taking a step away from my secondary instrument might be necessary. As of right now it’s impeding my goals to get into music school. Also I've been playing a lot of Minecraft. Bad things never die I guess!
D: Over quarantine I’ve been spending an embarrassing amount of time on my phone. However, I've read three books, I do yoga now, and I eat breakfast! Normally I don't have time in the morning to eat! I’ve been doing normal things too… like practicing and playing so much Minecraft that it hurts.
If you could see a teacher, who would you see and what would you say?
A: I would want to see Mrs. Edele of course! I want to know how she's doing! I know she's been very worried about her kids during the pandemic! She was also very worried about social distance education, as a music educator! I would also probably vent to her because she is our orchestra mom!
B: I would see Mr. Mainville because out of everyone in the school, I would say he would have the most insight as to what's going on right now. I also know he would give me some really good advice!
C: I would see my Jr. High band instructor, Mrs. Foster. I’m used to seeing her every day and I miss her! I would tell her how much I miss her and how I admire her dedication to her career and her students.
D: Mrs. Barton! I would tell her that I miss her and if she raises my grade I’ll give her a dollar!!
