Last week, there was a shooting at a Virginia Beach municipal building. The crime was committed by an employee who had resigned just hours before. The cause as to why he acted in such a way is not currently understood. Sadly, 12 people were killed and many others were injured during the attack.
The impact of this act is being felt throughout the country and at GRB because the senior class is on their senior trip to Virginia Beach. This incident has raised concern for parents and for students attending the trip.
The reality of a shooting or any deadly event happening during any school trip is very low so it should not be of concern, but it is hard not to worry when something so scary happens right before the trip.
Senior Collin Bennett said, “It's a little scary knowing that there was a shooting, but it happens everywhere, so if you're wasting your time on what could happen, then you won't have fun. No matter what, I think it's going to be fine. You just have to not stress about the bad things that have happened.”
Senior Nora Kingsbury said, “Statistically speaking, a mass shooting happening the weekend before the trip means that another mass shooting will not happen during the trip, so it eases my worries about it happening.”
Senior Kelly Caza stated, “I was very shocked when I heard about the shooting, but I think we will still enjoy our time there.”
Senior Shaylee Cealie said, “I was sad to hear the news and although it is in the same area, I feel that we will still be safe and have a fun time.”
