Mr. Mainville Offers Real-Life Lesson

After AP tests in May, students and teachers are left with a large amount of time until the end of the year. Many teachers choose to use this gap of time as a great way to teach students life skills. Mr. Mainville, who is the AP Biology teacher at GRB, is a great example of a teacher who does these lessons.

On June 3, Mr. Mainville's AP Biology class went outside to the teacher parking lot by the tennis courts during their double bell of class to learn how to jump start a car and change a tire. He taught the class important safety measures for doing these important skills and the proper steps to do them correctly.

The students learned things that many of them never knew, such as all vehicles have a jack and spare donut in the bottom of the trunk to fix a flat tire. They also learned the importance of things like making sure you carefully place the jack on the metal frame of the car, not the plastic edge, and that you should also always have a car emergency kit with jumper cables.

The class used senior Corey Maher and junior Lexi Lighthall’s vehicles to demonstrate the jump starting of a vehicle and Lighthall's car to demonstrate how to change a tire.

Senior Katie Distin said, “I feel like I am very prepared for life. It was nice for Mr. Mainville to take time out of his day to teach us these valuable lessons.”

Senior Abigail Cuyler noted, “It was a really good experience and I'm glad we did it so now I know how to change a tire and I feel prepared for life.”

Senior Ana Snyder stated, “I'm very glad for this opportunity, and although it was a bit windy when we did the demonstration, I appreciated how Mr. Mainville allowed us to help in changing the tire.”
