On February 15, the Fulton Red Raider Hockey Team faced off against the Syracuse Cougars (3). The Raiders played the Cougars earlier in the season and lost 15-1.
The Raiders came out looking for revenge against the Cougars. They had a lot of momentum after coming off of their first round victory against CNS, with a final score of 6-4.
The Raiders came out in the first period and scored a goal in the first two minutes of the game. The goal was scored by senior Kaleb Calkins, assisted by seniors Joe Galvagno and Eric Shear. The Red Raiders came out of the first period with a 1-0 lead even though they were being heavily outshot.
In the second period, the Raiders came out strong. Galvagno scored a shorthanded goal and gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead. However, they got four penalties and were only able to kill off three of them. At the end of the second period, the Raiders trailed 4-2.
In the third period, the train came off the rails for the Raiders. The Cougars scored four unanswered goals. The Raiders' season came to a heartbreaking end as they fell to the Cougars 8-2.
The Cougars ended up winning the section title over the West Genesee Wildcats on Monday, February 25. The final score of that game was 3-2 after four overtimes.
The Raiders finished the season 8-12 overall, which was a massive improvement from last season.
Senior Jon McCann stated, “This was a great last season. I would have liked to go further in the playoffs, but the amount we have achieved is more than any of my previous years combined.”
Senior Captain Joe Galvagno stated, “Now that the season is over I have had time to look back on all the things our team has accomplished. I feel that as a team we did accomplish most of the goals we set for our team. We all enjoyed the process throughout the year and it showed when we played. I am very happy with my final season and I am glad I got to spend it with some amazing kids.”
Coach Bartlett stated, “Overall, I was really pleased with our season. The boys on the team worked extremely hard and we met or exceeded most of the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year. Our locker room was a fun place to be and the team did a great job of coming together and working for a common goal."
He added, "Although we lost five very important seniors to graduation, we return a tremendous amount of talent and experience next year so the future looks bright for the Red Raider Hockey program!”
