Here at GRB, the debate about where students and faculty are permitted to park usually becomes a more popular topic in the spring. Some students have been talked to by administration about parking in teacher parking lots, which is usually due to a lack of parking spots in the “senior” parking lot.
The senior parking lot is said to be the paved parking lot that is right off Cedar Street. The teacher parking lots are the paved lots by the tennis courts and the paved lot on the North side of the school. The junior parking lot is said to be the dirt parking lot next to the park.
A number of seniors are complaining about the lack of parking in the “senior” parking lot due to the amount of juniors parking there. Seniors feel they have seniority to park there and should not have to resort to parking in the teacher lots and getting confronted for it. Some also feel they should not need to park in the dirt lot if it is meant for juniors to park in.
This is not the case, however. Administrators have clarified that both the paved parking lot and the dirt lot are for all students who drive to school. Students who arrive on time before 7:35 a.m. usually do not have an issue finding parking as the lot is half empty at that time. Students with late arrival or who arrive late for other reasons are typically the ones who have a difficult time finding parking in the paved student lot and are technically required to park in the dirt student lot.
Principal Mrs. Parkhurst stated, “We do not have enough space to dedicate a designated parking spot to just seniors.”
Assistant Principal Mr. Copani stated, “Parking is definitely difficult when you arrive late. Faculty have issues, as well, finding places to park when coming back from meetings. The parking issue is understandable.”
Getting to school early sounds like the safest way to be sure you have somewhere to park each day.
