Two of GRB’s most accomplished students have achieved the great honor of being named valedictorian and salutatorian. GRB’s 2019 Valedictorian is Camille Stevenson and GRB's Salutatorian is Shaylee Cealie.
Stevenson and Cealie ended up with final averages that were just eight hundredths of a point different. Both students had amazingly high averages, especially considering how they had to keep them up throughout taking both AP and Honors courses. Stevenson's weighted average is 102.342 and Cealie's weighted average is 102.261. The girls are ranked first and second in a class of 279 students. Stevenson earned 26.75 credits in high school and Cealie earned 24.25 credits.
Over Stevenson’s high school career, she has gone to great lengths to pack her schedule and take as many classes as possible. Those classes include Honors English, AP Global, AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, many technology classes, and music classes such as Orchestra.
As well as being intellectually inclined, Stevenson is also a three-season athlete. School sports she plays are volleyball, swimming, and softball. She is a very decorated athlete and has gone to Sectionals many times. Her proudest achievement is making Varsity Swimming Sectionals in her junior year.
In the fall, Stevenson will be attending the University of Rochester. She is pursuing a Neuroscience degree with plans to enter the medical field after graduation and is considering getting a PhD.
Cealie has never been a person to shy away from challenges, which can be seen with her great amount of advanced classes. Cealie has taken AP English, AP Biology, Physics, AP Calculus, OCC English 101 and 102, and AP US History, among many others.
Cealie also participates in many after-school activities. She has been a part of the girls varsity tennis team for four years and is a part of many clubs, including HOPE Club, Math Club, Student Senate, and Quirk's Players.
Cealie will be attending Saint John Fisher College in the fall to study Biology. Her goal in the future is to go to graduate school to become a pediatric genetic counselor.
Stevenson is very proud of her accomplishment and noted, “It has been a lot of hard work during the past few years to get where I am today. I always put academics before sports, music, and volunteer work and have always given 100% effort in whatever I was doing. My advice is to not overload yourself during high school and pick a few things you are passionate about and spend time doing those things.”
Cealie said, “I am happy that all of my hard work has paid off and I look forward to working just as hard in college.”
Senior Jenna Ruzekowicz stated, “I am so extremely happy for both Camille and Shaylee being our Val and Sal this year! Working with these friends for four years has been quite the journey but I am honestly so lucky to have them as study partners and classmates. I've truly never seen two students work as hard while simultaneously being supportive of their peers. They were always ready to help anyone who had questions on homework and never let the pressure of competition come before their friendships. Both are so incredibly deserving and are going to do amazing things next year and beyond.”
Stevenson and Cealie, as well as many other GRB seniors, have worked very hard to end up where they are and wish all underclassmen good luck in the rest of their high school career.
