Fulton divers held their own against fellow competitors on February 9 and scored crucial points necessary to win the Section 3 swimming and diving championships.
Eighth-grader Will Patterson earned 8th place, achieving 11 points, and sophomore Corinne Clarke earned 13th place, achieving 4 points. They both had prior experience with gymnastics for four years before joining the diving team.
Coach Lacey was extremely proud of the divers. Despite injuries and mental barriers, they achieved amazing goals and ensured Fulton a chance at winning Section 3 Championships. He said that Patterson needed to nail his last dive to earn an additional 2 points which put Fulton neck and neck with Mexico for the win and Patterson did it.
Coach Lacey also explained how Clarke had excruciating pain in her knee, but she fought through it and completed her dive. In fact, Clarke was supposed to have surgery on Tuesday, February 5 before the meet, which was February 9th, but she had the surgery postponed until February 15 so she could compete.
First year coach Mrs. DeRue said that the meet was very fun and that she has always been in awe of divers from watching them throughout college.
Clarke described the experience as "fun and cold" because the water was ice cold and when she got out of the water, it was a lot of shivering.
